Welcome
About Me
Hi, My name is Chen.
I was born in Wuhan, the capital city of Hubei province in China. When I chose to study at Hubei University, I have heard that the International Relations and Affairs major has a 2+2 project which cooperates with University of Canberra. I always have a great interest in western cultures and hope to study abroad since I entered high school, so I chose this major and came to UC to keep doing the Global Study after I finish my first two years of study at Hubei University.
I am a big movie fan and regard the movie as important as my life. This entertainment product we called the eighth art has provided me with a lot of knowledge and life experiences, and also led me to many colorful worlds. It is also because of the movie that I began to contact with different cultures of the world. I have been keeping the habit of going to the cinemas every week since 2013. And I would write hundreds of words of film reviews after seeing every movie. Although I still could not be called a specialist in this domain, movies have really changed my life. Moreover, I also like to write novels in my spare time. Most of them are fan fiction of my favorite movies and cartoons. After I be attracted by the stories and characters in the stories, I just could not stop myself from re-creation the stories. All of those inspirations just appeared in my mind and I thought they were so great that I must let others experience them. And I have also summarized a lot of writing experiences during my creative time. I also have a little interest in geography, by studying the maps, I can gain some knowledge about geopolitics, which has a connection with my current major. When I found a time that I have nothing to do, I would draw the maps on white paper. It can also be regarded as a kind of creative works.
I always regard the enrichment of the spiritual world as the ultimate purpose of my life. Thus, I always want to engage in works related to creation. Although in China most people do not take this type of work seriously, creation has never stopped in human history. After I graduate, I would like to enter the film industry and become a screenwriter or an international counselor. The knowledge about cultures and politics that I gain from my major could provide me with lots of help. I always hope to keep improving in this area and make a movie of my own one day and let the whole world see my inspirations and ideas.

The skills I need
In order to enhance the probability of being hired, the most important skill I need is English language skills. Obviously, my current English ability is not enough for my future career, especially the jobs which need fluent communication and clear logic. So, I need to improve my English skills especially my writing skill and try to let my English as good as native speakers within two years. For the movie industry, I still have many shortages in the knowledge of movie skills and history, so I really need to read more books about it and try to watch one or two famous high-rated movies every day. I would also write the film reviews more seriously, and try to make my own online film review channel. It can be expressed in the form of articles, audio or videos depending on how much spare time I have. For the editors working in media, I need to have more knowledge about modern history, political systems, and international situations. It also requires a lot of reading, and most importantly, I need to find some friends who are experts in social science subjects and keep the habit of discussing hot events with them. This can let me know people’s different opinions.
Examples of works
Private class tutor
I used to teach my students the unique skills of memorizing the maps, and also led them to find interest in geography. Although I could not keep studying geography because it had been classified in science disciplines in Chinese universities, but I have improved my communication and presentation skills during the teachings.
Cinema waiter
The other job is as a part-time waiter in a cinema near my previous university. At that time I always wanted to earn some money by myself, and working in a cinema can be very exciting for me as a movie fan. This job is very flexible, I need to dispatch and receive the 3D glasses, check the tickets, and examine the quality of the screening. This 6-month-period job made me understand more about the film market. By checking the showing time arrangement tables and listening to the audiences’ discussions, I could find out which kinds of movies attracted more people and how would the market respond to movies that have different public praises.

Marketing assistan of film cultural space
Here I am mainly responsible for arranging weekly screenings, promoting films and events on WeChat public account, and introducing them to the audiences. I also organize film-related discussion activities.

Film reviews
I have also done a lot of creative works. I used to write many film reviews. At first, I would only mention my personal feelings, then I began to focus a lot on the movie itself. I would mention the screenplay, the character set, the visual and sound effects,s and the ideological expression. I tried to judge movies from different angles and combine subjective with objective together. The short reviews that have several hundred words have been put on my social network pages. The longer reviews that have more than one thousand words have been put on my Douban page (Chinese version of IMDB).
